Nepal has decided to grant trekking permits to even solo trekkers in restricted areas.

Nepal Immigration will now be open to get a single permit to travel in restricted areas.  The Department of Immigration decided to allow a single traveler from March 22, 2026. Tourists will now be able to travel in areas designated as prohibited by Nepal with a single permit. The department will now issue a trekking permit to even a single hiker. Earlier, it was not customary to issue a trekking permit to a single hiker seeking to go to a prohibited area. In that situation, hikers were forced to find a trekking partner.

The decision was taken by the Department of Immigration, stating that this has caused inconvenience to tourists and has also affected tourism promotion. Other conditions and rules to be followed while granting such permission will be as per the law. These include the requirement to submit the application through an agency, the requirement to have a compulsory trekking guide with them, and the requirement that the registered agency take full responsibility for rescue in case of emergency.

A maximum of 7 trekkers will be able to get permits in a single group.

While obtaining permits, a maximum of 7 trekkers are allowed to get in groups through agencies. The department has now decided to grant permission for a maximum of 7 hikers in a group. The department has also stated that the decision was taken considering the situation that when a large number of hikers are trekking in a restricted area in a group through an agency, it is not easy to pay enough attention to the safety of the hikers, take care of traveler, and it is difficult to monitor the activities of the hikers by a single trekking guide. According to the department, the facility has now been added to allow the use of the online system when requesting permission in this way.

Visitors are allowed to obtain a permit by using a visa application number instead of a mandatory Nepalese visa.

Foreign tourists can now apply for trekking permits through registered trekking agency by providing their visa application number. This provision has been revised to require foreign nationals going on treks to provide their Nepalese visa when applying for a trekking permit. Tourists can now apply for a trekking permit before arriving in Nepal.

Travellers are granted permission to trek based on their visa application number and a copy of their passport. There are different restricted areas of Nepal for foreign nationals. Before going there, it is mandatory to obtain a trekking permit from the Immigration Department.
